Shūtoku High School Judo: Coach Kami on Diversity and Championship Victory

For the second part of the 48th National High School Judo Championship Interviews, we spoke with Shūtoku High School coach Tomiaki Kami. This year marked a triumphant season for the team, culminating in their first championship win after defeating Tokai University Sagami 3-0 in the final of the invitational series. This article explores Coach Kami’s insights into the team’s unique strengths and the key elements of their success.

A Team Defined by Diversity

Coach Kami describes this year’s Shūtoku team as unlike any he’s encountered before. “I don’t grasp if the word ‘grain uniform’ is appropriate,” he stated. “This is my first time seeing a team like this. Since everyone has a different type, I believe it would be very difficult for the other person to deal with it.”

The team’s strength lies in the varied skill sets of its members. Smaller athletes demonstrate greater mobility, while others specialize in carrying techniques. Yonezawa, competing in the 100kg class, possesses both power and versatility, capable of executing a range of techniques. Conversely, Kawaguchi, a heavyweight athlete, embodies a more traditional judo style. This diverse approach makes Shūtoku a challenging opponent to analyze and counter.

“The kumite members are scattered, and I think it’s a difficult team to capture,” Kami explained, referring to the team’s strategic composition and the difficulty opponents face in predicting their moves.

Looking Ahead

Shūtoku High School’s victory underscores the value of diversity and adaptability in competitive judo. Coach Kami’s emphasis on leveraging individual strengths and creating a team that is difficult to categorize positions Shūtoku as a formidable force in the sport. The team’s success serves as an example of how embracing unique talents can lead to championship results.
