Swiss Airbus A340 Returns Stranded Passengers to Switzerland
An Airbus A340 brought 211 passengers back to Switzerland after they were stranded due to the crisis in the region, according to SRF. The arrival was met with relief from both passengers and their families.
Relief and Gratitude Upon Arrival
The first Swiss special flight carrying Swiss citizens from the crisis area landed in Zurich in the afternoon. Passengers expressed their gratitude for the flight, with one returnee stating, “I was in Oman for a week with a colleague…We are very grateful that we are back now.” Another passenger, stranded in Oman from the beginning, shared, “It was a shame we were able to book the flight. Now we’re back.”
Navigating a Complex Flight Path
The flight from Muscat to Zurich took approximately 8 hours, requiring the crew to navigate around a large area of closed airspace surrounding the crisis zone. Captain Manfred Simon, one of Swiss’s longest-serving pilots, volunteered for the delicate flight. He explained, “We had an agreement with Zurich that if we didn’t hear anything, the security situation would be as we expected…If something had changed, they would have informed us and we could have reacted accordingly.” Captain Simon was thanked by approximately 150 passengers for bringing them home.
Additional Return Flights
In addition to Swiss, other airlines conducted return flights from the crisis area on the same day. Approximately 40 flights departed from Muscat, 55 from Dubai and 18 from Abu Dhabi. There were no departures from Doha. Swiss does not currently plan further special flights, but its subsidiary, Edelweiss, will operate flights from Oman to Switzerland on Friday and Saturday, including one regular flight and one special flight.
