Amazon Outage Disrupts Shopping Experience for Thousands
Amazon’s website and shopping app experienced a significant outage on Thursday, impacting users’ ability to complete purchases, access account details, and view product pricing. The disruptions began around 2 p.m. ET, with over 22,000 users reporting issues by 4 p.m. ET, according to outage tracking website Downdetector [1]. The issues were largely resolved by 8 p.m. ET.
Cause of the Outage
Amazon attributed the incident to a problem with a software code deployment. “We’re sorry that some customers may have temporarily experienced issues while shopping,” said Amazon spokesperson Jennie Bryant in a statement. “We have resolved the issue, which was related to a software code deployment, and website and app are now running smoothly.”
Impact on Services
Beyond the core Amazon shopping experience, users also reported difficulties with Amazon Fresh, the company’s grocery delivery service, specifically with order placement and viewing purchase history.
Related Outages
The outage occurred amidst ongoing concerns regarding disruptions to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company’s cloud computing division. Recent outages affecting AWS have been linked to drone strikes that damaged data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain [3]. Iranian state media reported that the data center in Bahrain was targeted by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, alleging Amazon’s support for U.S. “military and intelligence activities.” Yet, Amazon stated on Thursday that its cloud services were functioning normally [3].
Current Status
As of Friday, March 6, 2026, Amazon’s website and app are reported to be operating normally. Downdetector continues to monitor the status of Amazon services, including Amazon Prime Video and AWS [1], [2], and [4].
