Will St. Patrick’s Day at the White House Be Cancelled Due to US Government Shutdown?

The US federal government is facing a potential shutdown next month unless Democrats agree to approve a funding bill by March 14th. This date coincides with the scheduled visit of Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin to Washington, raising concerns about the optics of a St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the White House amidst a government shutdown.

Mr. Martin’s trip includes a stop in Austin, Texas, before traveling to Washington on March 11th for several events culminating on March 14th. However, the possibility of a shutdown casts a shadow over the traditional festivities.

Sources worry that President Donald Trump’s administration might cancel the St. Patrick’s Day party if thousands of federal employees remain unpaid due to the shutdown. A senior government source stated, “We are pragmatic, we are keeping an eye on things. Our embassy is keeping a close eye on things. We are monitoring all that is happening in the US very closely, but we have a plan marked out for the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste to visit the US.”

The impasse in Congress stems from Democrats’ opposition to President Trump’s proposed cuts to federal agencies. They refuse to support the funding bill unless these cuts are removed.

Will the iconic St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the White House proceed as planned, or will the looming government shutdown overshadow the festivities?

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
