The Crown’s Imelda Staunton on Playing Queen Elizabeth II: “It’s a Lonely Job”
Imelda Staunton has taken on the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the final two seasons of Netflix’s The Crown, and she describes the experience as profoundly moving – and surprisingly lonely.
Staunton, a veteran actress known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Vera Drake, steps into the shoes of the monarch for seasons five and six, portraying the Queen during a period of significant upheaval for both the royal family and the nation.
“It’s a lonely job, playing her,” Staunton admitted in a recent interview.”Because you’re always aware that you’re portraying someone who is, by her very nature, quite solitary. She doesn’t have a lot of people she can truly confide in.”
The later years of the Queen’s reign, which The Crown depicts, were marked by personal tragedies, family scandals, and a changing public perception of the monarchy. Staunton emphasizes the importance of portraying the Queen with nuance and respect, acknowledging the weight of her responsibilities and the sacrifices she made.
“She was a woman who dedicated her entire life to duty,” Staunton explained. “And that comes at a cost. It’s a huge weight to carry, and I think it’s important to show that.”
Staunton’s portrayal has been widely praised for its sensitivity and authenticity. She has meticulously researched the Queen’s mannerisms, voice, and public appearances, striving to capture the essence of the woman behind the crown.
The final season of The crown, currently in production, will cover the events leading up to and following the Queen’s death in September 2022.Staunton acknowledges the emotional challenge of portraying such a recent and significant ancient event.
“It’s a very delicate subject,” she says. “And we’re approaching it with the utmost respect and sensitivity.”

The Man Who Predicted the AI revolution – and What He Warns about Now
Kai-Fu Lee, a prominent venture capitalist and AI expert, accurately predicted the rise of artificial intelligence years ago. Now, he cautions that the current pace of growth poses significant risks, notably regarding job displacement and societal control. Lee, author of AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order, believes we are entering a new era where AI will automate a vast number of jobs, far exceeding previous industrial revolutions.
Lee’s early insights stemmed from his work at Google and Microsoft, where he witnessed firsthand the rapid advancements in machine learning. he observed China’s aggressive pursuit of AI dominance, recognizing its potential to leapfrog Western nations. His book detailed how China’s unique advantages – massive datasets, a strong entrepreneurial culture, and government support – positioned it as a leading force in AI innovation.
Though, Lee now expresses concern about the unchecked development of AI. He argues that the focus on creating increasingly powerful AI systems without considering the ethical and societal implications is a perilous path. He specifically warns about the potential for widespread job losses across various sectors, from manufacturing and transportation to white-collar professions like customer service and data analysis.
“We are facing a future where a significant portion of the workforce will be rendered obsolete by AI,” Lee stated in a recent interview.”This will create massive social and economic disruption if we don’t prepare for it.” He advocates for proactive measures such as worldwide basic income, retraining programs, and a re-evaluation of our societal values to adapt to a world where work is no longer the central organizing principle of life.
Beyond job displacement,Lee also warns about the potential for AI to be used for surveillance and control. He points to China’s social credit system as a cautionary example, where AI-powered technologies are used to monitor and assess citizens’ behavior. He fears that similar systems could be adopted in other countries, leading to a loss of privacy and freedom.
Lee urges for a more human-centered approach to AI development, one that prioritizes ethical considerations and societal well-being. He believes that AI should be used to augment human capabilities, not replace them entirely. He calls for greater collaboration between governments, researchers, and the private sector to ensure that AI benefits all of humanity, not just a select few.
