Teacher Stabbing Tragedy Rocks South Korean School
A shocking tragedy unfolded in Daejeon, South Korea, when a teacher fatally stabbed an eight-year-old elementary school student. The incident has sent shockwaves through the nation, prompting investigations and calls for enhanced safety measures in educational institutions.
According to authorities, the 40-year-old female teacher confessed to stabbing the student inside the school building on Monday afternoon. The child was discovered injured on the second floor, while the teacher, who sustained possible self-inflicted wounds, was found nearby. Despite efforts to save the girl, she was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Investigation Underway
Acting President Choi Sang-mok immediately ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring. Authorities are examining various aspects, including the teacher’s mental health history, workplace interactions, and potential warning signs.
Police disclosed that the teacher had requested a six-month leave of absence citing depression. However, after a doctor deemed her fit to return, she resumed work on December 20th, just 20 days after her leave ended.
Concerning Behavior Reported
Prior to the stabbing, the teacher reportedly displayed concerning behavior, including placing another teacher in a headlock. Following this incident, officials from the education office recommended she be placed on leave and physically separated from the staff.
Despite this, she remained at the school, sitting beside the vice-principal’s desk under supervision. Notably, she had not been teaching any classes since returning from her leave and had no contact with the victim.
School Safety Concerns Rise
This tragedy has ignited discussions about school safety in South Korea. While known for its overall safety, the nation has faced several high-profile crimes in recent years.
Acting President Choi expressed his condolences, stating, “It pains me to see such incident because a school should be our safest space. I offer my deep condolences to the victim’s family who suffered great shock and agony.”

The student, who had missed her scheduled pickup, was reported missing by her bus driver to the school authorities. Police revealed they intend to continue questioning the teacher once her medical recovery.
