Team Chelsea Carey Loses Scotties Eligibility After Player Departure
Winnipeg’s Team Chelsea Carey will no longer be competing in the 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts after the departure of third Karlee Burgess to Team Kerri Einarson in Manitoba. Curling Canada confirmed the news on Friday, citing the sport’s rules requiring at least three returning players to maintain qualification.
Alberta Teams Take Over Spots
As a result of this change, Alberta’s Team Selena Sturmay will now pre-qualify for the 2025 Scotties in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Meanwhile, Team Einarson will take Carey’s spot in the 2025 Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax.
Carey’s Team: A Season of Changes
Chelsea Carey took over as skip for the Winnipeg-based rink this season following the retirement of Jennifer Jones from four-person curling. Carey, a two-time Scotties champion, guided the team with strong showings on the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS), securing a pre-qualification spot for the 2025 Scotties with three returning players: Burgess, Zacharias, and Lenentine.
However, Burgess’s departure leaves only two players from last season’s team. While Team Carey held an Olympic Trials qualification following their high CTRS ranking at the end of the previous season, this change unfortunately impacts their eligibility for the 2025 Scotties.
Key Dates
The 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts is scheduled for February 14-23 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Manitoba Scotties playdowns are set for January 21-26.
