Tecno Revives Modular Phone Concept with Magnetic Interconnection Technology
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Tecno is revisiting the idea of modular smartphones with its new concept phone, previewed ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026. This move echoes the ambition of Google’s now-defunct Project Ara, aiming to offer users a customizable mobile experience.
The Return of Modular Design
The concept, dubbed “Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology,” centers around a smartphone ecosystem built on an ultra-thin magnetic architecture. Tecno’s approach differs from earlier modular designs like Project Ara, which utilized a frame with slide-in components and pogo-pin connectors. Instead, Tecno’s modules attach magnetically and connect to the core phone via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mmWave technology, functioning more as accessories than integral components.
Sleek Design and Dimensions
Tecno is prioritizing a sleek design, a common criticism of previous modular phone attempts. The base device measures just 4.9mm thick, and even with the addition of a 4.5mm power bank module, the overall thickness remains comparable to that of a standard flagship smartphone. This addresses a key concern with earlier modular prototypes, which tended to be bulky.
Design Variations and Modular Ecosystem
Tecno is showcasing two distinct design languages for the modular phone concept: the ATOM Edition, featuring a silver-aluminum body with red accents, and the MODA Edition, geared towards tech enthusiasts. The rear of the device is visually divided into eight modular zones to guide accessory placement.
The initial ecosystem includes approximately ten modules, including:
- Power Bank: A 4.5mm module that effectively doubles battery life.
- Action Camera: Designed for alternative shooting angles and content creation.
- Telephoto Lens: Utilizes the phone’s display as a live viewfinder.
A Shift Towards Accessories
Unlike Project Ara, which aimed for full component modularity – including the processor and camera – Tecno’s concept focuses on adding functionality through accessories. This approach allows for a slimmer design and potentially easier development and compatibility.
Availability and Future Outlook
As is common with concepts showcased at events like MWC, Tecno has not announced a specific release date or pricing for a commercial version of the modular phone. The company describes this as a “long-term design thinking” project, leaving the future of the device uncertain. Tecno will be unveiling its latest AI-powered intelligent product ecosystem, including the modular phone, at MWC Barcelona on March 3, 2026 [MWC Barcelona Agenda].
