The Bear Finally Reveals the Mystery Behind Natalie and Francie’s Feud
Nearly every good television demonstrate has a running joke that remains unresolved. For Game of Thrones, it was Tyrion Lannister’s joke about a jackass and a honeycomb in a brothel. Modern Family featured a broken step in multiple episodes, a gag that originated when Ty Burrell accidentally tripped down the stairs. The Bear also had a similar running gag, which was partially resolved in Season 4.
Since Season 2, rumors circulated about a sister in the Fak family, named Francie. Whenever Natalie was asked about Francie, she would become angry and curse her name, referencing an incident from the past. Francie was essentially banned from Natalie’s life and never appeared on the show. The source of their conflict remained a mystery, as Natalie would only say, “She knows what she did,” leaving fans eager for answers.
Brie Larson Plays Francie Fak, the Fak Brothers’ Sister
In Season 4, Episode 7, Academy Award-winning actor Brie Larson joined the cast of The Bear as Francine “Francie” Fak, the sister of Neil, Ted, and Sammy Fak. She is portrayed as abrasive but protective of her brothers, seemingly disapproving of their girlfriends and holding them to high standards. The introduction of Francie immediately reignited the tension with Natalie.
Francie and Natalie’s initial interaction at Tiffany and Frank’s wedding quickly escalated into a shouting match, requiring intervention from Pete and the Fak brothers. However, after a moment of shared vulnerability while helping Eva overcome her fear of dancing, they reconciled and expressed their mutual longing for each other.
Francie and Natalie Depart the Source of Their Longstanding Feud a Mystery
The Bear doesn’t fully explain the root of Natalie’s animosity towards Francie. However, subtitles during their heated conversation offer clues. The argument seems to be triggered by Neil drinking hot chocolate, with mentions of whipped cream being “everywhere,” Francie being drunk and taking the bus, Natalie’s inability to start a car, and a lack of cellphones to contact each other.
Based on these clues, it’s likely that Francie and Natalie were involved in a drunken incident at someone’s house, after which Francie left Natalie stranded. Given the lack of cellphones and their admission to having previously been romantically involved, they were likely younger teenagers or college students at the time. Their past romantic relationship likely intensified the rivalry and hurt feelings.
The resolution of their conflict feels somewhat anticlimactic. The purpose of their argument in this episode is to demonstrate the importance of family, whether biological or chosen, aligning with the episode’s themes of new beginnings and reconciliation. However, the show could have explored the bitterness between Francie and Natalie in more depth.
The Bear Season 5 Will Be the Final Season
The storyline involving Francie and Natalie wasn’t the only aspect of Season 4 that drew criticism. Many viewers found Carmy’s decision to leave the restaurant and the chaotic environment controversial. However, The Bear has been renewed for a fifth and final season, set to start production in January 2026, with a likely release in June or July 2026. It remains unknown whether Brie Larson will reprise her role as Francie Fak in Season 5.
Seasons 1-4 of The Bear are currently available to stream on Hulu.
