The summer excavation campaign in the deposits of the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos) has allowed us to find indications of the first floors specially prepared to create a home for Neolithic inhabitants, a unique discovery in the whole world.
The discovery was made in the Portalón, the entrance site to Cueva Mayor, and “one of the sites that is giving the best results in Castilla y León”, explained the person in charge, Amalia Pérez, during a visit to the media.
Pérez has indicated that “they have found a habitation area, in which homes are being made” but with a “particularity” that has not been seen in any other site of the time, about 7,000 years old.
“They are conditioning spaces to live”, preparing a ground to settle, baked clay floors to give more consistency and stability to the terrain.
Amalia Pérez explained that the ancient inhabitants of Portalón, in those early Neolithic times, “put some branches under them, set them on fire and deposited clay on top of them to stabilize” the area.
