The president of Congress, Francina Armengolhas confirmed the decision of Felipe VI to designate the socialist leader Pedro Sánchez as the new candidate for the investiture after the candidate’s failed attempt popularAlberto Núñez Feijóo.
The King has entrusted Sánchez with trying to gain confidence in the Chamber, something for which he will need in the first instance the support of the absolute majority of its members (176 seats) or, in the second instance, more votes in favor than against.
The president of Congress has avoided talking about possible deadlines for holding the investiture debate. She has remembered that there is time until November 27at which point, if Sánchez’s attempt had not been successful, new elections would be automatically called.
Now Armengol is preparing to contact the designated candidate to choose the appropriate moment, enough for Sánchez to close the appropriate agreements that guarantee him the votes.
Once the candidate is sure that the “situation is sufficiently mature, the Plenary Session will be convened in the most urgent manner.”
