The decision of the PP of Extremadura to flatly refuse to allow Vox to enter the regional government even at the risk of a repetition of the elections has divided the party internally. While in some territories such as Andalusia -where Juanma Moreno has an absolute majority – defend that each region “has autonomy to resolve”, in others, such as the Balearic Islands, where they need the abstention of the party of Santiago Abascal for the investiture of Marga Prohensdo not share the decision of Maria Guardiola.
The leader of the popular yesterday chose to adopt a Solomonic position by stating that both in this case and in that of the Valencian Community, where Carlos Mazon He has agreed to deliver three advisory services to his future partners, “they have acted correctly.” In addition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo censured the “invasion of national positions” by parties that leave “without effect” the conversations that their regional representatives have held, in an implicit criticism of Vox’s vice president of Political Action, Jorge Buxadéwhich moved to Mérida on Tuesday before the negotiations in Extremadura were definitively broken.
In the Balearic Islands, Guardiola’s position has caused surprise in the PP, where, despite the secrecy imposed by the party’s commanding officers, the slogan is repeated internally that their situation is not comparable to Extremadura, that “they are different realities.” In the first place, by parliamentary arithmetic: the popular They have more deputies in the archipelago than the entire left put together, so they only need one abstention from Vox. And also, they were clear from the beginning that they could not aspire to free support without concessions.
The Balearic PP has ceded to Vox the presidency of the regional Parliament and a programmatic pre-agreement with strategic rhetorical issues for those of Abascal. In exchange, they aspire to a solo government with the abstention of Vox for the investiture. Although nobody wants to interfere and they respect Extremadura’s position, it is a position that is visibly not shared. The feeling, despite everything, is that the tension will not lead to a repetition of elections in any of the territories where the two right-wing parties are negotiating.
Guardiola’s frontal clash with Vox contrasts with the express pact that Carlos Mazón sealed to guarantee his investiture in the Valencian Community. Hence, the Valencian PP has opted this week for a low profile, without wanting to go into assessing the strategy followed in Extremadura or its possible impact on 23-J. Mazón has not moved from his phrase that “Guardiola is the best thing that can happen to Extremadura.”
