The TikTok Killer: The Case of Esther Estepa
The disappearance of 42-year-old Esther Estepa while traveling in Spain captivated international attention, ultimately revealing a chilling case of deception and murder linked to a social media influencer. The story, detailed in the Netflix docuseries The TikTok Killer, highlights the dangers of online connections and the dark secrets hidden behind curated online personas.
The Disappearance of Esther Estepa
Esther Estepa, a solo traveler from Seville, met José Jurado Montilla, known online as “Dynamite Montilla,” at a hostel in Alicante in August 2023.1 The pair embarked on a 37-kilometer hike from Denia to Gandía on August 22, 2023. Montilla reportedly called emergency services when Estepa began experiencing a swollen leg and a severe headache, and she was taken to a hospital by ambulance.1
Estepa was discharged from the hospital at 4:30 a.m. The following day. Shortly after, her mother, Josefa “Pepa” Pérez, received concerning WhatsApp messages from Estepa stating she was “broke” and planning to start a “new life in Buenos Aires.”1 Pérez found the messages suspicious, as Estepa had strong ties to her two dogs and would not abandon them.1
The Investigation and a Troubling Past
Estepa’s family reported her missing on August 26, 2023, after becoming increasingly concerned by the unusual messages.1 Initial investigations considered the possibility that Estepa had voluntarily disappeared. However, Estepa’s family focused their attention on Montilla, the last known person to be with her.
The family’s investigation uncovered a disturbing truth about Montilla: he was a convicted serial killer. He had previously served 28 years in prison for murdering four people, including two tourists, in the 1980s.2 Despite his criminal history, Montilla maintained an active social media presence, documenting his travels and interactions with others, including Estepa.1
Discovery of Remains and Current Status
Estepa’s remains were discovered in a secluded area near Gandía, Alicante, beginning in February 2024, with the full recovery completed by June 21, 2024.4 Authorities confirmed that she died from a blow to the head.4
Montilla, currently in preventive detention, has been formally charged with Estepa’s murder, as well as another homicide.4 The trials are expected to capture place later in 2026.4 He continues to deny involvement in Estepa’s death.4
The case of Esther Estepa serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of trusting individuals met online and the importance of vigilance when traveling.
