Thorbjornsen and Åberg Set for Final Round Showdown at The Players Championship
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Michael Thorbjornsen and Ludvig Åberg will compete in the final pairing at The Players Championship on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at TPC Sawgrass. The pairing marks the first time the two players will be grouped together at The Players, though they are both familiar with the course and each other, as residents of the Ponte Vedra Beach area.
A Familiar Rivalry
Åberg currently leads the tournament at 13 under par, even as Thorbjornsen trails by three strokes at 10 under. Cameron Young is alone in third place at 9 under. The two golfers have a history, having first competed against each other in junior golf before continuing their rivalry in college. Åberg attended Texas Tech, and Thorbjornsen went to Stanford. Both earned PGA Tour cards through the PGA Tour University program, with Åberg being the first recipient and Thorbjornsen following a year later.
Thorbjornsen’s Rise
Thorbjornsen’s journey to contention hasn’t been without obstacles. He overcame an opening-round 74, attributing it to challenging weather conditions, and has since posted consecutive rounds in the 60s, including a third-round 67. This is Thorbjornsen’s debut at The Players Championship, but he has spent considerable time practicing at TPC Sawgrass.
Hometown Advantage
Both Åberg and Thorbjornsen call Ponte Vedra Beach home, giving them a unique familiarity with the Stadium Course. Thorbjornsen noted the advantage of knowing the course well, stating that it feels less like unfamiliar territory and more like a familiar competition. He also expressed his admiration for Åberg, describing him as a “great guy” and a “very solid player” with a strong mental game.
Historical Context
Contending in one’s Players Championship debut is a rare feat. Only Hal Sutton and Craig Perks have previously accomplished this in the tournament’s 52-year history. Thorbjornsen’s performance over the last two rounds has been particularly impressive, with a seven-under 65 on Friday and a 67 on Saturday.
Looking Ahead
Thorbjornsen emphasized the importance of maintaining a steady approach and putting himself in contention, believing that success will eventually follow. He acknowledges the demanding nature of championship golf and the need to learn from experience. Sunday’s final round will be a test of both skill and mental fortitude for both players as they vie for the coveted title at The Players Championship.
