Dublin’s Capuchin Day Centre faced a surge in demand for Christmas food support this week, with all 3,000 tickets for festive hampers gone within hours of opening. This unprecedented situation left some families, like a young mother with a child with special needs, distraught after missing out on vital aid.
Over 3,000 People Queue for Christmas Hampers
People began queuing as early as 4am on Wednesday, with the distribution of tickets starting at 7am. By 9:30am, all hampers were claimed, prompting the centre’s manager, Alan Bailey, to say: “We have never run out this early.”
One Mother’s Struggle Highlights Crisis
A young mother, who arrived shortly before the hampers ran out, spoke to The Irish Times, tears in her eyes, explaining her desperation. “There is nothing for my child. My child has special needs. I am on my own.” She revealed waiting until her son went to his special school before joining the queue.
Centre Promises Support for All Those in Need
Brian Friel, the centre’s chief executive, reassured the community that no one would go hungry. “In line with our mission that no one will go hungry, anyone who was there on Wednesday and missed out will be taken care of.”
He also confirmed an increase in donations, attributed to the public response to news of the high demand. “Poverty. There are a lot of fancy words you can use, but that is it at the root of it,” Friel stated.
Toy Vouchers and Ongoing Support Provided
On Thursday, the centre saw further queues, not only for lunch but also for toy vouchers. Over 500 vouchers, each worth €40, will be distributed before Christmas, costing over €20,000. The centre also runs ongoing programs for families, including weekly distributions of nappies, infant formula, and supports for mothers.
“We have a system where the parent registers with photo identification and they provide a copy of the baby’s birth certificate,” said Friel. About 200 tins of infant formula are distributed weekly – at a cost of €200,000 a year.
