Irish Man Jailed for Knife-Point Robbery and Assault

Letterkenny Circuit Court has sentenced Adeleke Adelani, 27, to five and a half years in prison for threatening a man with a knife and stealing over €2,500 from his bank account. The incident occurred at Fortwell Apartments in Letterkenny on July 11, 2022. Adelani, currently held at Castlerea Prison, appeared before Judge John Aylmer.

Details of the Crime

The victim, Ravindranath Kolagotla, a cyber security professional who began working in Letterkenny in 2022, was subjected to a terrifying ordeal lasting an hour and nine minutes. According to Detective Garda Stephen McGonigle’s testimony, a woman visited Kolagotla’s apartment three times on the day of the incident, inquiring about two men he had previously housed. Adelani accompanied her on the final visit.

Upon entering the apartment, Adelani pushed Kolagotla onto a sofa and held his hand on the victim’s neck. He threatened Kolagotla, warning him against speaking and threatening physical violence. Adelani attempted to break a Heineken bottle against a door and then placed it on a coffee table. He then ransacked the apartment, collecting laptops and other electronic gadgets in a bin bag.

When Kolagotla refused to unlock his phone and access his banking app, Adelani held a knife blade to his neck, further escalating the threat. Kolagotla pleaded with his attackers to stop, but was forced to transfer over €2,500 during the ordeal. Following the incident, Kolagotla was left shaken and had to leave Letterkenny.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The case was presented by Fiona Crawford BL, barrister for the State, based on the testimony of Detective Garda McGonigle. The court heard that Adelani used surgical gloves during the commission of the crime.

Sentence and Aftermath

Judge Aylmer sentenced Adelani to five and a half years in prison, reflecting the severity of the crime and the trauma inflicted upon the victim. The sentence serves as a deterrent to others considering similar acts of violence and theft.
