Hamas Releases Three Israeli Hostages in Gaza Truce

In a significant development towards ending the 15-month-long conflict in Gaza, Hamas has released three Israeli hostages as part of an ongoing truce agreement.

Hostages Freed

Ofer Kalderon, a French-Israeli dual national, and Yarden Bibas were handed over to Red Cross officials in Khan Younis before being transferred to Israel. Israeli-American Keith Siegel was released separately at the Gaza City seaport a few hours later.

Mr. Bibas is the father of baby Kfir and Ariel, two young children kidnapped by Hamas-led gunmen during the October 7, 2023, cross-border attack. Hamas previously claimed in November 2023 that the children and their mother, Shiri, were killed in an Israeli airstrike. However, there has been no further confirmation regarding their fate.

Prisoner Exchange

This handover follows a commitment by Hamas to release 182 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostages. Negotiations for the release of the remaining hostages and a subsequent Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza are set to commence by Tuesday.

Rafah Crossing Reopens

The truce has also led to the reopening of the Rafah crossing on the Gaza-Egypt border. The first Palestinians to cross included individuals with critical medical conditions, such as children suffering from cancer and heart conditions, aided by a bus provided by the World Health Organization.

The crossing will initially allow passage for 50 injured militants and 50 wounded civilians, along with their escorts. An additional 100 individuals, primarily students, are also expected to cross for humanitarian reasons.

Maintaining the Truce

While the hostage handover was conducted smoothly, with no significant disruptions witnessed, Hamas fighters were present, underscoring their continued influence in Gaza despite considerable losses sustained during the conflict.

Mr. Kalderon, who had previously seen his children released in November 2023, and Mr. Bibas were paraded before a stage adorned with posters featuring prominent Hamas figures. Among them was a portrait of Mohammad Deif, the former military commander whose death Hamas confirmed this week.

“Ofer Kalderon is free! We share the immense relief and joy of his loved ones after 483 days of unimaginable hell,” French President Emmanuel Macron announced in a statement.

Eighteen hostages, including five Thais released Thursday, have now been freed in exchange for 400 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Discussions on the remaining hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops are scheduled to begin by Tuesday.

The initial six-week ceasefire, facilitated by Egyptian and Qatari mediators with US backing, has largely held, despite several incidents leading to accusations of violations from both sides.

The October 7, 2023, Hamas attack resulted in an estimated 1,200 fatalities and over 250 hostages taken, according to Israeli figures. In response, Israel’s military campaign has drastically damaged the densely populated Gaza Strip, causing the deaths of over 47,000 Palestinians, as reported by Palestinian health authorities.

Stay updated on this rapidly evolving situation as negotiations continue and the hope for lasting peace in the region grows.
