Tim Kaine Stuns on SNL: “What’s That Name?” Quiz Segment Highlights 2024 Election
Saturday Night Live Season 49 kicked off with a bang as Democratic Senator Tim Kaine made a surprise appearance on the Nov. 4 episode hosted by John Mulaney. The sketch comedy staple delivered a hilarious political twist in a segment called “What’s That Name: Election Edition,” challenging Mulaney to identify Kaine amidst a lineup of familiar political figures.
Kaine’s Return to the Spotlight
Kaine, who served as Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential running mate in 2016, stumped Mulaney with a clever quip. “You voted for me to be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office in an election more recent than the release of ‘Zootopia.’ What’s my name?” Kaine quipped. Mulaney, playing the flustered quiz show contestant named Ben, drew comparisons to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, admitted, “It’s not my fault. If he was a more memorable guy like Tim Walz. This is very much a guy like Tim Walz. Let’s see them side by side. Not only does he look exactly like Tim Walz, his name was also Tim. Really, his name was Tim.”
Kaine retorted with a witty response, “My name is still Tim. I exist. I’m a senator representing Virginia.”
SNL Features Atwood and Election Commentary
The sketch featured other notable players, including “SNL’s” regular cast member playing a contestant named “Margaret,” revealed to be Canadian author Margaret Atwood, known for her dystopian novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The segment delved into topical issues, with Mulaney’s character grappling with harder-hitting questions about police brutality, and Atwood’s entry bringing to light the alarming similarities between our world and the fictional dystopia she created.
The Nov. 2 episode marked Mulaney’s sixth time hosting NBC’s late-night cornerstone, solidifying his place in the show’s “Five-Timers Club.”
Mulaney’s SNL Journey
Mulaney’s journey with “SNL” began in 2008 as a writer, eventually transitioning to on-screen roles. His memorable sketches include “Dinner Lobster,” “Subway Churro,” “Airport Sushi,” and “Cha Cha Slide.” His comedic prominence has risen over the years, fueled by successful Netflix comedy specials like “Everybody’s in LA” and “Baby J.”
