Timberwolves’ Playoff Push Intertwined with Italy’s World Baseball Classic Run
The Minnesota Timberwolves’ pursuit of a favorable playoff seed in the NBA is taking place alongside a unique and heartwarming story: the breakout performance of Dante Nori, son of Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori, in the World Baseball Classic. As the Timberwolves navigate a tight Western Conference race, the team and its staff are enthusiastically supporting Nori’s journey with the Italian national team.
A Family Affair: Baseball Roots Run Deep
Micah Nori’s son, Dante Nori, has emerged as a key player for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. Italy faced the United States on Tuesday night, a game that coincided with the Timberwolves’ contest against the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite the conflicting schedules, Micah Nori made it clear where his focus would be at certain points in the evening. “I will be watching the Timberwolves,” Nori said, “But at 6 o’clock Pacific time, I will be focused on the Italians and the Americans in the WBC, for sure.”
The Nori family’s connection to baseball is extensive. Micah’s father, Fred Nori, played college baseball at Indiana University and spent time in professional baseball. Micah himself also played baseball at Indiana, achieving a team-best batting average of .365 as a senior. While Micah initially entered the NBA world through a scouting role with the Toronto Raptors, his roots remained firmly planted in baseball.
Dante Nori’s passion for baseball began early, with his father encouraging the sport from a young age. By age four, Micah recognized his son’s potential in baseball, steering him away from basketball. Dante later acknowledged that his decision to focus on baseball became clear in middle school when he realized his height would limit his basketball prospects. “It was a very uncomplicated choice,” Dante Nori said. “Just keep the cleats on and play baseball.”
Team Support and a Welcome Distraction
The Timberwolves organization, including head coach Chris Finch and co-owner Alex Rodriguez, have shown strong support for Dante Nori and the Italian team. Rodriguez, a former Major League Baseball star, has even offered advice to Dante during visits to Minnesota. Micah Nori noted the widespread enthusiasm within the team, with players sending videos and pictures of themselves watching Dante’s games.
“It sounds crazy, but so many guys are locked in,” Micah Nori said. “Our head coach is a considerable fan and I can’t tell you how many people send videos or pictures of them watching Dante’s game. It means a lot. It is a welcome distraction, if you will, one that has you just get away from the grind a little bit.”
Dante Nori’s Performance in the WBC
Through his first two games of the tournament, Dante Nori has been a standout performer for Italy, going 5-for-7 at the plate, including a two-homer game against Brazil. His success is not only a source of pride for his family but also a morale boost for the Timberwolves organization as they head into the final stretch of the regular season.
Dante Nori recognizes the significance of representing his heritage on the international stage. “Being around all these great NBA players your whole life, it helps you out listening to them, seeing their perform ethic, seeing what they had to do to get there,” Dante Nori said. “And then the standpoint of getting to rep that name — Italia — across your chest, you’re playing for your ancestors, you’re playing for your family, especially my grandpa Fred. Him getting to watch is really special. All of that, it’s just all coming together. It’s sweet.”
As the Timberwolves continue their playoff push, the Nori family’s story serves as a reminder of the power of family, the pursuit of passion, and the unexpected connections between the worlds of basketball and baseball.
