Strengthening Ties with the Caribbean: The Saint Lucia Visit
The President’s trip, which began on June 28th, prioritized bolstering Nigeria’s relationships within the Caribbean region and fostering greater South-South cooperation. Saint Lucia served as the initial destination for this diplomatic push. During his state visit, President Tinubu engaged in high-level discussions with Governor-General cyril errol Melchiades Charles and Prime Minister philip Pierre, signaling a commitment to mutual growth and understanding.
A pivotal moment of the Saint Lucia leg of the tour was President Tinubu’s address to a joint session of the Senate and House of Assembly. Delivered at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom, Sandals Grande, the speech was attended by leaders from the Organisation of eastern Caribbean States (OECS), key government representatives, members of the Nigerian diaspora residing in Saint Lucia, and Dr. didacus Jules, Director-General of the OECS. This address provided a platform to articulate Nigeria’s vision for strengthened partnerships and collaborative initiatives.

Following the productive visit to Saint Lucia (June 29th – July 4th), President Tinubu proceeded to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit (July 5th – July 7th). He attended as a representative of nigeria, which currently holds ‘partner country’ status within the BRICS economic bloc – a designation indicating a strong interest in future full membership.
The BRICS summit, hosted by President Luiz Inacio Lula da silva, brought together leaders from brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, alongside representatives from other emerging economies. This participation underscores Nigeria’s growing role on the global stage and its commitment to engaging with influential economic and political alliances.
