## Fostering Early Language Skills: A Regional Initiative for Young Families
A new public health campaign is launching across Mauricie and Center-du-Québec this summer, focused on the critical link between early exposure too books and a child’s developmental trajectory. The initiative, designed to cultivate a love of reading from infancy, will distribute 191 age-appropriate books to families with children aged 0-3 years, delivered through existing family support networks.
### Addressing Regional Developmental Trends
Recent data from the Quebec Survey on the Progress of Kindergarten children (EQDEM) highlights a concerning trend: approximately one in seven children in the region experiences challenges with cognitive and language development [[3]]. This is further compounded by findings from the Quebec survey on the preschool of kindergarten children (EQPPEM),which indicate that shared reading experiences with toddlers begin later in this region compared to other areas of the province. These statistics underscore the urgent need for proactive interventions.
Dr. manon Toupin, a public health physician, emphasizes the profound impact of early literacy. “introducing books at a young age, and making it a regular part of a child’s life, is a powerful catalyst for language growth,” she explains. “Beyond vocabulary acquisition, shared reading strengthens the parent-child bond and nurtures crucial socio-emotional skills.” [[2]]
### Empowering Parents with resources
The books selected for distribution are specifically tailored to the developmental needs of infants and toddlers, and each copy includes a bookmark featuring encouraging messages about incorporating reading into daily routines. A QR code on the bookmark provides parents with direct access to expert advice from speech-language pathologists, offering practical ideas for interactive reading activities. the book selection itself was guided by the expertise of speech-language pathologists within the region.
### Extensive Support for Language Development
This book distribution is part of a broader commitment to supporting language development in young children. Families with children aged 18 months to 5 years who are experiencing language delays or difficulties can access a range of services. These include informative workshops designed to equip parents with effective strategies for stimulating their child’s language skills, as well as a variety of language intervention groups available throughout mauricie and Centre-du-Québec.
Over the past year alone, more than 120 data sessions and intervention opportunities were provided to families, demonstrating a sustained effort to address this critical area of child development. This initiative represents a proactive step towards ensuring all children in the region have the possibility to thrive, starting with the simple pleasure of a shared story.
