Tomiño Sets Sights on a Healthier Future with "Plan 2 Million" Initiative

Tomiño City Council is taking a bold step towards a healthier future for its residents with the recent endorsement of the "Plan 2 Million" initiative by the Galician Sports Cluster. This ambitious plan aims to double the number of physically active individuals in Galicia, with Tomiño leading the charge in promoting physical well-being and improving the overall quality of life for its citizens.

The "Plan 2 Million" was presented at a recent meeting of the intersectoral health committee, which saw participation from a diverse range of stakeholders including representatives from social services, disability associations, local pharmacies, gyms, and the Health Centre. Francisco Cortagoso, vice-president of the Galician Sports Cluster, highlighted the crucial role of sports in combatting sedentary lifestyles and fostering a healthier society. With only 1.3 million people in Galicia currently engaging in regular physical activity, the plan sets an ambitious goal to reach 2 million by encouraging greater participation.

Mayor Sandra González emphasized the council’s commitment to comprehensive well-being, stating that health extends beyond mere physical absence of illness. "It encompasses cultivating healthy lifestyle habits that enhance the quality of life for all residents," she declared. The council plans to engage various sectors in health and well-being to organize impactful campaigns targeting unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcoholism, and obesity. Concrete objectives and timelines will be set for these initiatives to ensure holistic health promotion and injury prevention.

Councilor for Sports and Welfare, Rubén García, stressed the importance of community engagement and awareness. "We aim to involve residents through tangible initiatives, fostering a deeper connection and participation within our community," he explained.

Tomiño is already demonstrating its commitment to health through its "Healthy Impact" agenda, a pioneering program designed to promote healthy activities and lifestyle choices. Future initiatives will focus on disseminating information about available resources, not just for adults but also for children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. A monitoring plan is also proposed for individuals over 70 to enhance health and prevent frailty, thereby ensuring their autonomy for as long as possible.

Through the "Plan 2 Million" initiative and its unwavering dedication to health and well-being, Tomiño is setting a positive example for other communities, demonstrating that a thriving society begins with individual and collective commitment to living healthily.
