Tommy DeCarlo, Boston Singer, Dies at 60 on Anniversary of Brad Delp’s Death
Tommy DeCarlo, the longtime lead singer of the rock band Boston, died on Monday, March 9, 2026, at the age of 60 after a battle with brain cancer. His passing occurred on the 19th anniversary of the death of Boston’s original vocalist, Brad Delp.
The news was confirmed by DeCarlo’s wife, Annie, and their children, Talia and Tommy Jr., in a heartfelt Facebook post. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9th, 2026,” the statement read. “After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.”
A Fan Who Became the Frontman
DeCarlo’s journey to fronting Boston was an improbable one. He discovered the band at age twelve and remained a devoted fan. In the 1990s, he began recording his own versions of Boston songs. After Delp’s death by suicide on March 9, 2007, DeCarlo composed a tribute song and shared it online. Tom Scholz, founding member of Boston, discovered the song and contacted DeCarlo, ultimately inviting him to join the band in 2007.
Career with Boston and Solo Work
DeCarlo remained Boston’s lead singer until his death. He recorded the album Life, Love & Hope with the band in 2013. Beyond his work with Boston, DeCarlo pursued his own musical projects, forming the band DeCarlo. He released two albums with DeCarlo: Lightning Strikes Twice in 2020 and Dancing In The Moonlight in 2022.
Health Battle and Legacy
DeCarlo’s health struggles began in September 2025, when he suffered a brain bleed. During emergency surgery, doctors discovered two melanoma masses on his brain and another spot on his lungs. Despite the diagnosis, he continued treatment and, for a time, showed improvement, returning home from the hospital after Christmas. A GoFundMe campaign launched by his family raised over $56,000 to facilitate cover medical expenses.
The Boston website now features a photograph of DeCarlo, commemorating his life and career. The band has not yet released an official statement regarding future plans.
