Toyota Urban Cruiser: A Recent Era for the Compact EV
Toyota has resurrected the Urban Cruiser nameplate with a new, fully electric compact SUV. The 2026 model, essentially a rebadged Suzuki eVitara, marks Toyota’s second foray into the electric vehicle market following the bZ4X in 2022, and signals a broader commitment to expanding its EV lineup in Europe and beyond.
Design and Dimensions
Despite its relatively small stature – measuring 4,285 mm in length – the Urban Cruiser offers surprising practicality. Its 2.7-meter wheelbase is comparable to popular subcompact SUVs. The vehicle provides 310 liters of trunk space, and rear seats are adjustable by up to 16 centimeters, enhancing versatility.
Powertrain and Performance
Customers can choose between two battery options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh, both utilizing Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology known for its stability and cobalt-free composition. Charging times range to 80% in approximately 45 minutes, depending on the selected battery size. Range estimates vary from 300 to 400 kilometers.
The smaller battery option delivers 144 horsepower with front-wheel drive. The larger battery is available in front-wheel drive (174 hp) or all-wheel drive configurations (184 hp). The four-wheel drive version enhances off-road capability.
Pricing and Availability
Toyota has initiated sales with promotional pricing in select markets, including the Czech Republic. Initial discounts of 50,000 CZK, combined with a 50,000 CZK trade-in bonus and free accessories valued at 12,600 CZK, reduce the starting price to 759,000 CZK. The larger battery models and all-wheel drive versions are priced from 799,000 CZK and 849,000 CZK respectively, after applying the incentives. Kinto One operational leasing is likewise available from 9,900 CZK per month (excluding VAT).
Features and Equipment
The Urban Cruiser is offered in two trim levels: Style and a higher-spec variant. The base Style trim includes 18-inch alloy wheels, textile upholstery, a 10-inch multimedia system with navigation, a rear parking camera, and a heat pump with 11kW AC charging. The upgraded trim adds 19-inch wheels, Matrix LED headlights, a JBL premium audio system, a wireless smartphone charger, a fixed panoramic roof, and a 360-degree camera.
Market Position and Future Outlook
The first Urban Cruisers are expected to reach roads in the coming weeks. Toyota is simultaneously launching the larger bZ4X Touring model with a promotional price of 1,209,000 CZK, expanding its electric vehicle offerings.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser represents a strategic move for the automaker, leveraging a partnership with Suzuki to accelerate its EV development and cater to the growing demand for compact, affordable electric vehicles.
