U.S. Men’s Olympic hockey goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, President Donald Trump announced during his State of the Union address on February 24, 2026 .
Team USA’s Olympic Victory
The announcement comes after Hellebuyck and Team USA secured a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime . Both the men’s and women’s U.S. Hockey teams defeated Canada in overtime to win their respective gold medals .
Hellebuyck’s Performance
Hellebuyck made 41 saves in the gold medal game against Canada and likewise assisted on the overtime goal scored by Jack Hughes . President Trump highlighted a specific save where Hellebuyck stretched his stick to deflect a shot, questioning whether it was skill or luck .
The Presidential Medal of Freedom
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, to cultural or other significant public endeavors. Athletes such as Simone Biles, Joe DiMaggio, Michael Jordan, Megan Rapinoe and Babe Ruth are among the 671 individuals who have received the award . It is believed that Hellebuyck will be the first hockey player to receive the honor .
Team Reaction and Ceremony
Players from the U.S. Men’s team were present at the State of the Union address, wearing blue “USA” sweaters and their gold medals. Lawmakers from both parties gave them a standing ovation and chanted “USA!” . President Trump stated that he had asked the team to vote on whether Hellebuyck should receive the honor, and every player voted in favor .
