Trump Calls for Palestinian Relocation Amidst Gaza War, Agrees to Netanyahu Meeting

US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by reiterating his desire to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to “safer” areas like Egypt or Jordan. He made these comments during a press briefing on Air Force One, following weeks of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Trump’s Gaza Relocation Proposal

Trump’s proposal, which he first floated last week, sparked immediate debate. He described Gaza as a “demolition site” ravaged by 15 months of war and suggested relocating Palestinians to a more peaceful environment. “I would like to get them living in an area where they can live without disruption and revolution and violence so much,” Trump stated.

“You know, when you look at the Gaza Strip, it’s been hell for so many years… there’s always been violence associated with it,” he continued.

Despite questions about how this proposal aligns with a two-state solution, Trump maintained his commitment to finding a lasting peace agreement. He announced his intention to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington “very soon.”

Trump’s Diplomatic Efforts

Trump has also engaged in conversations with Jordanian King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, both of whom have traditionally opposed the displacement of Palestinians.

“I wish he would take some,” Trump expressed, referring to President al-Sisi of Egypt. “We helped them a lot, and I’m sure he’d help us.” He added, “As they say, it’s a rough neighborhood, but I think he would do it, and I think the king of Jordan would do it too.

Almost all of Gaza’s 2.4 million inhabitants have been displaced by the war provoked by Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023.

Current State of the Conflict

The situation in Gaza remains volatile, with a ceasefire currently in place for six weeks. This ceasefire, which includes the release of 33 hostages held in Gaza against the release of some 1,900 Palestinian prisoners, is intended to pave the way for further negotiations.

The upcoming phases of the agreement will focus on freeing the remaining hostages and ultimately ending the war. Reconstruction efforts in Gaza and the return of the bodies of the lost hostages will follow.

The Biden administration had developed plans for the post-war period in Gaza, but President Trump has yet to address these plans publicly.
