Trump Criticizes Ukraine’s Negotiation Stance, Questions US Aid
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his criticism of Ukraine’s approach to negotiations with Russia to end the ongoing war, suggesting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has a weakening negotiating position. He likewise questioned the Biden administration’s policy of providing military aid to Ukraine.
In an interview with Politico, Trump stated, “I think Putin is ready to make an agreement,” repeating a previous assertion. He argued that Zelenskyy is not demonstrating sufficient willingness to negotiate and suggested Ukraine is becoming an obstacle to a resolution.
“You have no cards. He has even fewer cards now,” Trump said, without elaborating on the reasons for this assessment.
Trump also criticized the U.S. For providing ammunition to Ukraine, suggesting it could be sold to countries in the Middle East instead. This comment came as Ukraine has requested assistance from the United States in countering Iranian-made Shahed drones, which are being used in the Middle East .
Negotiation History and Current Status
The previous round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia took place in February. Moscow has since indicated that the possibility of future meetings, previously planned for Abu Dhabi, is uncertain due to the conflict in the Middle East. The Kremlin has signaled it might withdraw from negotiations if Ukraine does not agree to territorial concessions.
The European Commission has dismissed Moscow’s position as an “excuse” and an attempt to delay the negotiation process.
