Indonesia Firmly Rejects Relocation of Palestinian Refugees

Concerns have been raised by the international community over a leaked plan proposing the relocation of millions of Palestinians from Gaza to other countries, including Indonesia. This proposal, first reported by NBC News, cites an unnamed source within the incoming Trump administration as stating that Indonesia was being considered as a potential destination for some of the displaced Palestinians.

Indonesia swiftly and unequivocally rejected this proposal. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on January 21st expressing its unwavering stance against the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza. “The Indonesian government has not received any information, from anyone, or any plans regarding the relocation of some of Gaza’s 2 million residents to Indonesia as part of post-conflict reconstruction efforts,” the statement declared.

The ministry further emphasized that any attempt to relocate Gazan residents is “unacceptable” and seen as perpetuating Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. Indonesia argues that such plans only serve to exacerbate the Palestinian refugee crisis and violate international law.

Instead of relocation, Indonesia calls for a diplomatic approach to resolve the conflict. In a statement released by the ministry, emphasis is placed on the need for a "two-state solution, in accordance with international law and agreed international parameters,” recognizing the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Dr. Sri Handayani, a spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, further elaborated on Indonesia’s stance in an interview with Archyde.

“We believe that any proposal that aims to relocate Palestinians without their consent or their right to return is unacceptable,” said Dr. Handayani. “The Palestinian people have the right to determine their own future, and relocating them against their will amounts to displacement."

She stressed that Indonesia views this proposal as part of a larger strategy aimed at expelling Palestinians from Gaza rather than addressing the root causes of the conflict. “ Indonesia, as the third largest Muslim-majority country in the world, has always stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people," Dr. Handayani added, "We are committed to supporting their struggle for self-determination and an autonomous state with East Jerusalem as its capital."

Indonesia’s resolute stance against the relocation plan underscores its commitment to a peaceful and just solution for the Palestinian people, advocating instead for genuine dialogue and a commitment to international law to achieve a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
