5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Central Turkey

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck central Turkey early Friday, sending residents into the streets, though no immediate damage or injuries have been reported, according to Turkish authorities The Associated Press reported.

Details of the Earthquake

The earthquake occurred at 3:35 a.m. Local time and was centered in the town of Niksar in Tokat province, at a depth of 6.4 kilometers (4 miles), Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management agency (AFAD) stated. The tremor was felt in several provinces, but AFAD reported “no adverse developments.”

Resident Reaction

Despite the lack of reported damage, many residents were seen waiting in their cars or on the streets, fearing to return to their homes due to the cold, Haberturk news channel reported.

Seismic Activity in Turkey

Turkey is situated in a seismically active zone and experiences frequent earthquakes. In 2023, a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed over 53,000 people in Turkey and caused widespread destruction across 11 southern and southeastern provinces. An additional 6,000 people lost their lives in northern Syria as a result of the same seismic event according to AFAD.

Recent Seismic Activity

Just days prior, on Monday, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck western Turkey, causing three buildings damaged in a previous tremor to collapse. Twenty-two people were injured due to panic-related falls, but no fatalities were reported as reported by the Associated Press.
