The United States Department of Defense officially announced the repatriation of the two men on Wednesday. They had each pleaded guilty to multiple offenses before a military commission, fulfilling the requirements for a responsible transfer home. According to the Department of Defense, the offenses included murder in violation of laws on war, causing serious bodily injury, conspiracy, and destruction of property.

Inspector-General Razarudin emphasized that both men will undergo a rigorous rehabilitation program before reuniting with their families. He stated, “Everyone deserves a second chance, and the Royal Malaysia Police will ensure they achieve it.” Razarudin also mentioned that both individuals arrived in good health and displayed a positive attitude towards the rehabilitation process.

While they are eager to reunite with their families, the Ministry of Home Affairs has mandated an assessment process followed by a comprehensive rehabilitation phase before their full reintegration into society.

Malaysia’s Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution has confirmed the government received the Guantanamo Bay detainees, emphasizing that the process adheres to the principles of human rights and universal justice. He added that a specific reintegration program has been prepared for both individuals, encompassing support services, welfare, and health screenings.

This return marks a significant step towards closure for the men and their families. It also highlights Malaysia’s commitment to reintegrating citizens who have been detained abroad, providing them with the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
