Rep. Tony Gonzales Faces Uphill Battle for Re-election Amid Scandal and Voter Concerns
Fort Stockton, TX – Congressman Tony Gonzales is facing significant headwinds as he seeks re-election in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District. A recent scandal involving allegations of an affair with a staff member, coupled with long-simmering discontent among West Texas voters, has place his seat in jeopardy. The primary election on Tuesday will pit Gonzales against YouTube personality Brandon Herrera, in a rematch of the 2024 primary runoff.
Scandal and Its Impact
Gonzales is facing backlash after accusations surfaced regarding an affair with Regina Santos-Aviles, a staff member who died by suicide in September 2025. Illicit text messages between Santos-Aviles and Gonzales were reportedly shared by her husband this month, fueling calls for his resignation.
The controversy has overshadowed Gonzales’s legislative record and amplified existing concerns about his connection to the sprawling district, which stretches from San Antonio to El Paso.
Local Leaders Express Doubt
Several local political leaders across the political spectrum in West Texas believe Gonzales’s chances of retaining his seat are slim. The situation represents a potential breaking point for a congressman who has navigated a politically fraught path since taking office in 2021.
Ruben Falcon, a former mayor of Fort Stockton, acknowledged Gonzales’s understanding of the challenges facing small towns in West Texas, stating, “He understood the challenges of small-town life… How hard it is to get resources… just to reach out and say, ‘you matter too.’” Whereas, Falcon also noted the timing of the scandal and its potential impact on the election.
Voter Disconnect and Policy Concerns
Beyond the recent scandal, resentment towards Gonzales has been building for years, particularly in the more conservative areas of West Texas. Tammie Smith, chair of the Upton County Republican Party, expressed disappointment with his voting record, specifically citing his support for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act following the Uvalde school shooting and his vote to federally recognize same-sex marriages.
Smith stated, “He voted for red flag laws, he voted for same-sex marriages, and those aren’t our values… He doesn’t vote for the values of his constituents.”
Some residents also sense Gonzales spends too much time in San Antonio and is out of touch with the needs of the more rural parts of the district.
A Potential Shift in Representation
Democrats in the region, while few in number, had seen Gonzales as a potential ally on certain issues. Susan Hays, a Marfa Democrat running for a seat on the Presidio County Commissioners Court, expressed concern that a more conservative representative might not be as supportive of local issues, such as opposing the extension of the border wall along Big Bend National Park.
However, Gonzales has secured funding for local initiatives, including nearly $500,000 for the Fort Stockton Police Department and $1 million in grants for a local health clinic.
The Herrera Challenge
Gonzales faces a strong challenge from Brandon Herrera, a YouTube personality who narrowly lost to him in the 2024 primary runoff. Herrera’s campaign is capitalizing on the dissatisfaction with Gonzales among conservative voters.
The outcome of the primary election will be a test of whether Gonzales can overcome the scandal and reconnect with voters in the vast and diverse 23rd Congressional District.
