O’Neill Joins Orioles: Outfielder Lands Major $49.5M Deal

The Baltimore Orioles have bolstered their lineup with a big signing. Outfielder Tyler O’Neill has agreed to a three-year, $49.5 million contract with the Orioles, a source told ESPN. This move fills the void left by Anthony Santander, who departed in free agency after a breakout season.

O’Neill’s Power Will Enhance Orioles Lineup

O’Neill, 29, enjoyed a resurgence with the Boston Red Sox last season. While he will soon be eclipsed by the massive contract signed by Juan Soto, O’Neill’s agreement represents the biggest payday for an outfielder this winter. He opted for Baltimore, adding a right-handed bat to a lineup with a majority of left-handed hitters.

Known for his offensive prowess against left-handed pitching, O’Neill smashed 16 of his 31 home runs off lefties this year, and he accomplished this in fewer plate appearances. With the left-field fences at Camden Yards being moved in, O’Neill’s power will be more dangerous than ever, particularly with a potent lineup already featuring Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Jordan Westburg, Colton Cowser, and Cedric Mullins.

O’Neill: A Return to Form

After spending his first six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, O’Neill was traded to Boston last winter. He rebounded impressively with the Red Sox, hitting .241/.336/.511 with 61 RBIs in 113 games. This was his most productive season since his breakout 2021 campaign, when he finished eighth in National League MVP voting and earned his second consecutive Gold Glove Award in left field.

Baltimore Still Seeking Pitching Depth

Despite the exciting signing of O’Neill, Baltimore is not done yet. They continue to search for starting-pitching reinforcements to complement Zach Eflin, Grayson Rodriguez, and Dean Kremer in their rotation.

The Orioles are reportedly in pursuit of top free agent Corbin Burnes, who could command a contract exceeding $200 million.

They also recently reached a one-year, $8.5 million deal with veteran catcher Gary Sanchez.

The Orioles are making a strong push to solidify their roster and continue their ascent in the American League.
