As the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, consumers are navigating a landscape shaped by rising credit card debt, tariffs, and fluctuating economic confidence. Despite these challenges, some shoppers are prepared, and businesses remain optimistic.
Rising Credit Card Debt and Economic Sentiment
U.S. credit card balances reached $1.23 trillion in the third quarter, exceeding levels from the previous year. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports this increase, signaling a potential shift in consumer spending habits.
Financial advisor cody Moore attributes some of the cautiousness to market volatility caused by tariffs. “I think the volatility that [tariffs] created in the market this year has left Americans just a little bit more timid and curious, and maybe uncertain for where we’re headed, into the new year,[in terms of] how the economy is going to be,” Moore explained.
This sentiment aligns with data from the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index, which indicates a decline in consumer confidence.Moore noted the index has fallen from the 70s to around 50 in recent months.
Consumers Adapt and Plan Ahead
Despite rising prices, some consumers are proactively managing their finances to ensure thay can provide for their families during the holidays. Jade anderson, a shopper in College Station, shared her strategy.
“I think prices have always been increasing, but I’ve planned it ahead,” anderson said. “I’ve kind of been putting money away all year so I can splurge on my whole family.”
Price increases due to tariffs are impacting businesses across the board. Meredith McAuliffe, owner of Sabi Boutique in College Station, acknowledges these challenges.
“We definitely have seen price increases because of tariffs, and I would assume every other business has seen that too. We adjust, but we try our hardest for it not to impact our customers,” McAuliffe added. Despite the economic headwinds, Sabi Boutique anticipates a strong holiday shopping season.
