U2 Returns to Original Music with Novel EP ‘Days of Ash’

U2 has released a six-song EP, “Days of Ash,” marking their first new studio recording in over eight years since 2014’s “Songs of Experience.” The release comes as the band continues to navigate a period of legacy projects, including their residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Bono’s memoir, and the re-imagining of their catalog with “Songs of Surrender” in 2023.

A Politically Charged Collection

“Days of Ash” maintains U2’s signature sound while incorporating a strong political focus. Several tracks are dedicated to individuals who have died as a result of repression or violence. “American Obituary” honors Rene Goode, while “Song of the Future” is a tribute to Sarin Esmailzadeh, a 16-year-aged Iranian girl killed during the 2022 protests. “One Life At A Time” is dedicated to Palestinian activist Avdah Hatalin, who was killed in the West Bank.

Collaborations and Creative Partnerships

The EP features collaborations with several artists. “Yours Eternally” includes contributions from Ed Sheeran and Taras Topolja, the lead singer of the Ukrainian band Antytila. “Wildpeace” was created with producer Jacknife Lee and incorporates a reading of the works of Israeli poet Yehuda Amihai by Nigerian artist Adeola.

Revival of ‘Propaganda’ Fanzine

Alongside the EP release, U2 has revived “Propaganda,” their fanzine originally founded in 1986. A new digital edition is available, alongside a limited print edition in independent record stores across Europe and North America.

Looking Ahead

Bono has emphasized that these songs represent a distinct creative impulse separate from their upcoming full-length album. “These songs were impatient to be released. They are songs of resistance, anxiety, and mourning. Songs of celebration will follow later,” he stated. Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Added, “It’s not a question of whether anyone needs a new U2 record, it’s whether we’re making music that deserves to be heard. I believe these songs stand alongside our best work.”

“Days of Ash” is currently available on all major streaming platforms.
