The Elder Scrolls VI to Utilize Creation Engine 3, Returning to Classic Bethesda Style

Bethesda Game Studios has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI will be powered by Creation Engine 3, an upgraded version of the engine that has underpinned their flagship titles like Starfield and Skyrim. This move signals a return to the studio’s “classic style” of open-world role-playing, differentiating itself from the more recent experimental approaches seen in Starfield and Fallout 76.

Creation Engine 3: A New Foundation

Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Game Studios, revealed that the development team has been working on upgrading Creation Engine 2 to Creation Engine 3 specifically for The Elder Scrolls VI and future projects. According to Howard, the focus of this upgrade includes improvements to rendering, world systems loading, and bringing detail closer to the camera more seamlessly.

The Creation Engine originally began as a fork of Gamebryo, the engine used in Fallout 3, with Bethesda continually adding new features and capabilities, such as the advanced lighting and rendering systems introduced in Fallout 76. The studio is expected to incorporate modern features like multi-frame generation and path tracing into Creation Engine 3.

A Return to Form

Howard described Starfield and Fallout 76 as “creative detours” from the traditional Elder Scrolls experience. He emphasized that The Elder Scrolls VI represents a return to the style of exploration found in classic Bethesda titles like Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4.

The development team aims to create a world that feels fresh and immersive, focusing on innovation in how players experience the game for the first time.

What to Expect

Even as details remain scarce, the confirmation of Creation Engine 3 and the commitment to a “classic Bethesda style” suggest that The Elder Scrolls VI will prioritize deep world exploration, player agency, and a rich, immersive experience. The game is expected to build upon the foundations of previous Elder Scrolls titles while incorporating new technologies and design philosophies.

Bethesda has not yet announced a release date for The Elder Scrolls VI.
