UCI Imposes New Restrictions on Bike Computers and Jersey Pockets

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling’s governing body, has introduced new regulations targeting bike computers and jersey pockets, aiming to enhance rider safety and ensure sporting fairness. The rules, effective from January 2028, include size limits for bike computers and restrictions on the placement of jersey pockets.

Bike Computer Size Limits

The UCI has set maximum dimensions for bike computers at 126 × 71mm, aligning with the largest currently available products on the market, such as the Wahoo Ace (125 x 70mm). The decision was driven by concerns over cognitive load and rider safety, as increasing data availability during races could contribute to accidents. The UCI stated, “Limiting the size of bike computers is intended to prevent an excessive increase in the amount of data available during races, which could significantly compromise rider safety.”

Despite the ban date, the UCI acknowledges the need for further research on how riders interact with data streams during competition. The governing body emphasized collaboration with stakeholders to better understand these interactions.

Jersey Pocket Restrictions

Beginning July 1, 2026, jersey pockets will be restricted to the rear of the garment, except for a front pocket designated solely for radio communication devices. The UCI observed that front internal pockets containing nutritional products were often inaccessible during races, altering riders’ body shapes and providing aerodynamic advantages. Studies cited by the UCI link these practices to increased speed and accident severity, prompting the rule change to address both safety and fairness concerns.
