A Hamas official stated the Palestinian group will respond “soon” to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to end Israel’s two-year war in Gaza.

Hamas Politburo member mohammed Nazar told Al Jazeera on Thursday that the group is discussing Trump’s plan to halt Israel’s war on Gaza and will soon announce its position on the proposal.

Nazar said Hamas, as a representative of the Palestinian resistance, has the right to express its views “in a way that is in the interests of the Palestinian people.”

“We deal with (this plan) not based on the logic that ‘time is the sword hanging around our necks’,” Nazar said.

Earlier this week, the White House released a 20-point document calling for an immediate ceasefire, the release of captured personnel by Hamas in exchange for israel’s imprisonment of Palestinian political prisoners, Israel’s phased withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament, and a transitional government led by an international agency.

On Tuesday, Trump gave Hamas three to four days to agree to the plan.

Palestinians are eager for the end of the war, but many believe the plan is heavily biased towards Israel.

In previous negotiations, Hamas insisted on Israel’s withdrawal from the famine-affected enclave and sought a permanent ceasefire, ensuring displaced families can return to their homes, especially in northern Gaza, where Israeli troops are intensifying attacks.

Hamas says it will respond

Analysts said Hamas faces a dilemma regarding Trump’s proposal to end the Gaza war.

Egypt strives to convince Hamas

Earlier on Thursday,Egypt’s foreign minister said his country was working with Qatar and Türkiye to convince Hamas to accept Trump’s proposal.

Speaking at the French Institute of International Relations in Paris on Thursday, Badel Abdul atti said that Hamas must be disarmed and that Israel should not be given an excuse to continue attacking Gaza.

He said: “We should not give any excuses to either party for such crazy daily killings of civilians using Hamas as an excuse. What’s happening now is far beyond October 7.” He refers to the Palestinian group’s 2023 attack on Israel, which killed 1,129 people according to Israeli statistics.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said the Israeli offensive against Gaza has killed more then 66,000 people, most of them women and children, but experts believe the actual death toll may be as high as three times that number.

“It’s beyond revenge. It’s the ongoing ethnic cleansing and genocide. So, enough is enough,” Abdul Atti said.

Many “vacuums that need to be filled”

Qatar and Egypt, two major mediators, said Trump’s plan requires further negotiations on certain elements.

Abdul Atti said Cairo is coordinating with Doha and Ankara to reach a consensus.
