Ukraine Bolsters Drone Warfare Capabilities Amidst Russian Buildup

Ukraine is intensifying its focus on unmanned systems as a key factor in its defense against Russia, with both sides rapidly expanding their drone capabilities. The shift comes as Russia plans to significantly increase its drone corps, aiming for 101,000 personnel by April 1, 2026, according to Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.

The Evolving Battlefield

The nature of warfare in Ukraine is evolving, characterized by blurring front lines and increased infiltration by small infantry groups, extending “kill zones” due to the growing effectiveness of attack drones. Syrskyi noted that in many areas, mutual infiltration zones can reach over 10 kilometers.

Ukraine’s Drone Offensive and Defensive Measures

Despite Russia’s efforts, Ukrainian forces are maintaining their positions and even conducting offensive operations in certain sectors. In February 2026, Ukrainian drones targeted over 105,200 enemy targets, with the Ukrainian Armed Forces Unmanned Systems Forces group accounting for a quarter of these strikes. Ukrainian forces have also been successful in recapturing territory, exceeding the amount lost to Russian forces during the same period.

To counter the increasing Russian drone threat, Ukraine is establishing UAV interceptor platoons within its armed forces. These units are equipped with anti-drone guns, electronic warfare systems, and net launchers to neutralize enemy drones, including FPV drones, quadcopters, and attack drones, while also improving logistical support.

Focus on Domestic Drone Development

Ukraine is prioritizing the development of its own unmanned systems, particularly Fiber Optic Programmable (FPV) drones. The country currently maintains an advantage in the employ of multi-rotor FPV drones, though Russia has increased its production capacity to over 19,000 FPV drones per day. Syrskyi emphasized the demand to accelerate the development, procurement, and deployment of effective unmanned systems to gain a technological edge.

Syrskyi’s Leadership

Oleksandr Syrskyi, the current Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, assumed the position on February 8, 2024, succeeding Valerii Zaluzhnyi. He previously served as the commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces from 2019 to 2024.

The Ukrainian military’s adaptation and innovation in drone warfare are crucial as the conflict with Russia continues to evolve.
