Dan Gurney’s name resonates throughout American motorsports history. Known for his infectious smile, blonde hair, and undeniable talent, Gurney excelled behind the wheel of everything from hot rods to Formula 1 cars. His adventurous spirit and knack for speed fueled countless stories and legends, leaving an indelible mark on the automotive world.

A Unique Race Car Born

Today, we delve into the tale of a particular car that embodies Gurney’s adventurous spirit: a 1961 Chevrolet Impala. More than just a classic muscle car, this blue and white beauty transformed into a formidable race machine, leaving its mark on the British Touring Car Championship.

Gurney, racing for Porsche in Formula 1, noticed fellow drivers competing in support races featuring saloon cars, dominated by powerful 3.8-liter Jaguars. Seeing an opportunity, Gurney decided to challenge them, aiming to conquer the British Touring Car Championship. His solution? A seemingly unlikely contender—a 1961 Chevrolet Impala.

A Chevrolet Impala Turned Racer

Around early 1961, Gurney reached out to Zora Arkus-Duntov, the legendary “father of the Corvette,” and secured an Impala. Sources suggest Gurney may have had access to a pre-production model, unavailable to the public. The Impala received several modifications, transforming it from a classic cruiser into a formidable race machine:

The Impala was equipped with a 409 Turbo Fire V-8, likely meticulously blueprinted for performance, a four-speed manual transmission, a bench seat, no air conditioning, and—crucially—no power steering. Imagine Gurney wrestling that steering wheel with six-and-a-quarter turns lock-to-lock while battling Jaguars at Silverstone! This car embodied Gurney’s diverse automotive passions—hot rodding, drag racing, and road racing—all rolled into one.

A Story for the Ages

To fully appreciate the legacy of this Impala, you need to witness the captivating story behind it. The tale involves a boat trip, French conspiracies, a cross-country honeymoon drive, and even a rare Zora Arkus-Duntov misstep.

Watch the exclusive interview with Justin Gurney and Tom Cotter to uncover the whole story, filled with fascinating details, anecdotes, and insights.

Justin sums it up perfectly: “He would probably say that’s not loud enough, that exhaust.”
