Union Oyster House Celebrates 200 Years as America’s Oldest Restaurant

BOSTON — This year, the Union Oyster House in Boston marks its 200th anniversary as the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the United States. Located at 41–43 Union Street in the heart of Downtown Boston, the historic eatery continues to serve diners even as preserving a rich legacy dating back to 1826.

A Building Steeped in History

The building itself predates the restaurant, originally constructed around 1716 [1]. Before becoming a dining establishment, it housed various businesses, including the dress goods business of Hopestill Capen, “At the Sign of the Cornfields,” in 1742 [1], and the printing press of Isaiah Thomas, publisher of the Massachusetts Spy, in 1771 [1]. It even served as a temporary residence for Louis Philippe, who later became the Citizen King of France, in 1796 [1].

From Atwood & Bacon to a Boston Landmark

The Union Oyster House officially opened on August 3, 1826, as Atwood & Bacon Oyster House [1]. Over the decades, it has turn into a beloved institution, attracting a diverse clientele, including prominent figures like the Kennedy family, John F. Kerry, and Daniel Webster [1]. Webster was particularly known for his substantial appetite, reportedly consuming at least six plates of oysters per visit [1].

A Legacy of Quality and Community

Joseph Milano has owned the restaurant since 1970 and emphasizes the importance of maintaining both the historical integrity of the building and the quality of the dining experience. He describes himself as a “steward” of the property [4]. Milano credits the restaurant’s success to a dedicated team, many of whom have been employed there for nearly 50 years [4].

The Union Oyster House is renowned for its complimentary homemade cornbread, clam chowder, fresh seafood, and, of course, oysters [4].

Expanding Footprint and Dining Spaces

Over the years, the restaurant has expanded its footprint, acquiring adjacent properties in 1982 and 1995 [4]. Today, the Union Oyster House offers three floors of dining spaces:

  • First Floor: Features a lobster tank, the original oyster bar, booth seating, and a gift shop.
  • Second Floor: Includes a full bar, two additional dining rooms, and “the Kennedy Booth” (Booth No. 18), a favorite spot of John F. Kennedy [4].
  • Third Floor (Capen’s Loft): Offers an intimate private dining room.

During warmer months, the restaurant too provides outdoor seating on the Freedom Trail [4].

Recognition and Accolades

The Union Oyster House has received numerous accolades, including being named North America’s Best Landmark Restaurant by the World Culinary Awards in 2020, 2024, and 2025 [4]. It was also recognized by USA TODAY for having the best clam chowder in Boston in 2018 and included on Lonely Planet’s list of the best restaurants in the world that same year [4]. In 2023, Taste Atlas named it one of the top 50 most legendary restaurants globally [4].
