Galicia to Allow Tax Deductions for Cash Payments on School Supplies

Families in Galicia will be able to deduct cash payments made for school supplies and textbooks on their 2025 Income Tax returns, following a decision by the Galician Government to approve a new bill. The move addresses concerns raised after a previous rule required electronic payments, excluding cash transactions.

New Rule Details

The new legislation will allow families who made cash purchases of school materials between July 1 and December 31, 2025, to claim a 15% reduction in expenses, up to a maximum of 105 euros per student, when filing their Income Tax return.

Background: Shift from Electronic Payment Requirement

The change comes after the Xunta de Galicia initially mandated electronic payments for school supplies, a rule that surprised many Galician families. Previously, a requirement for payment via electronic means explicitly excluded cash transactions.

Legislative Process and Impact

To implement the change before the next income tax campaign, the Xunta is pursuing a bill that “exempts cash payments this year” provided other economic requirements are met. Alfonso Rueda, President of the Xunta de Galicia, estimates that approximately 60,000 families will benefit from this tax relief, resulting in an estimated savings of 6.5 million euros.

Who is Alfonso Rueda?

Alfonso Rueda Valenzuela has served as the President of the Regional Government of Galicia since May 2022. He is a member of the People’s Party (PP) and too leads the PPdeG, its Galician branch. Rueda was elected to the Parliament of Galicia in 2009, representing the province of Pontevedra. [1] He succeeded Alberto Núñez Feijóo as president of the People’s Party of Galicia in 2022.
