US Maintains Focus on Iran’s Offensive Capabilities Amid Operation Epic Fury

The United States has clarified that its military objectives in Iran remain focused on dismantling the country’s offensive missile capabilities, missile production facilities, and naval assets, while likewise preventing the development of nuclear weapons. This statement comes after President Donald Trump indicated a potential role for the US in shaping Iran’s future leadership.

Operation Epic Fury: Core Objectives

The Pentagon initiated Operation Epic Fury earlier this week, with a stated goal of neutralizing Iran’s ability to project offensive military power. According to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the operation is specifically targeting Iran’s offensive missiles, missile production infrastructure, and naval forces, alongside efforts to impede Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Global Banking & Finance Review reported on this clarification on March 5, 2026.

Clarification on US Objectives and Presidential Involvement

Secretary Hegseth emphasized, “There’s no expansion in our objectives. We recognize exactly what we’re trying to achieve.” He further noted that President Trump is actively involved in considering the future political landscape in Iran, stating that the President is “having a heck of a say in who runs Iran given the ongoing operation.”

President Trump, in a telephone interview with Reuters, expressed the view that the United States should play a role in selecting Iran’s next leader.
