According to Buurmeijer, the cancellation of this year’s VAM Berg Cross for elites doesn’t necessarily mean a final farewell.”The youth cross – organized by De Peddelaars – will take place a day earlier (on Saturday,November 15th). We do this consciously,to keep our volunteers and youth members involved. We want to keep the club active and show that we can still create something great. Although, it does mean some sponsors have withdrawn now that the UCI cross is no longer taking place, which is a shame, but understandable.”
Later this year, the association will meet with the province and sponsors to discuss organizing the UCI cross over the next three years. “It would be a shame if this competition didn’t take place, because the location is unique. But perhaps we should approach it differently. The competition on the Heerderstrand is also great. Since becoming an Exact Cross, they’ve attracted a much stronger field of participants. That’s something to consider. But as an association, we didn’t want to be left with the financial burden. Cancellation was the only sensible decision.”
