The White House said ahead of the visit that the visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan, where Vance will go on Tuesday, is designed to support the reconciliation between the two countries.
After arriving in Yerevan, Vance spoke with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at a joint press conference.
The two leaders signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.
Vance announced that the United States will invest nine billion dollars in Armenia’s nuclear energy industry.
Commentators point out that the visit shows the strengthening of the US position in the South Caucasus region.
Both countries – Armenia and Azerbaijan – previously agreed to participate in Donald Trump’s Peace Council.
Commentators also point out that the US vice president will not visit Georgia, a country that has long been considered a key US ally in the South Caucasus.
Since the Donald Trump administration came to power, the Georgian government has been trying to get the sanctions imposed by the previous US administration to be lifted, but so far it has not succeeded.
