Catastrophic Bushfire Conditions Threaten Victoria and South Australia

Table of Contents

victoria is bracing for extremely dangerous bushfire conditions on Friday, with a total fire ban in place across the state and a “catastrophic” fire danger rating for most regions. Thousands of residents and holidaymakers are being urged to evacuate, as authorities warn that conditions are “not survivable” if caught in a blaze.South Australia is also facing severe heatwave conditions and a total fire ban in the mid-north region.

Current Fire Activity

Three emergency warnings are currently in effect for meaningful bushfires burning in Victoria. A major blaze is impacting the Longwood area in northern Victoria, with over 2,000 hectares already burned . Another significant fire is burning more than 3,000 hectares at mount Lawson, on the border of Victoria and New South Wales . These fires are proving challenging to control due to hot, steep terrain.

The fire near Mount Lawson has generated its own thunderstorm, increasing the risk of dry lightning strikes and further fire spread. Lightning has been detected west of Khancoban, with smoke drifting towards Jindabyne and Cooma in New South Wales .

Extreme Weather Conditions

The heightened fire danger is driven by a combination of factors: soaring temperatures, strong winds, and dry conditions. Temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C (104°F) across much of Victoria. Wind gusts could reach up to 100km/h (62 mph), exacerbating fire spread . A severe and unstable air mass is contributing to the volatile conditions, increasing the risk of ignition and rapid fire growth .

Evacuations and Closures

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of campers from popular holiday destinations. Public land in the southwest, Wimmera, north, central, and northern country regions of Victoria is closed. Specifically, campers along the Goulburn, Campaspe, and Murray rivers, lake Eildon, the Grampians, and the Great Ocean Road must evacuate before 7:00 AM Friday . At least 450 schools and kindergartens offering holiday programs will also be closed as a precautionary measure.

Warnings from Authorities

Emergency services are urging residents to take the threat extremely seriously. Country Fire Authority (CFA) chief officer Jason Heffernan emphasized that the fires have the potential to spread rapidly and will not be contained before the peak of the dangerous conditions. Forest Fire Management Victoria chief Chris Hardman warned that it is “not survivable” to be caught in a bushfire under these conditions, stating that individuals “will be killed before the fire gets to you” .The clear message from authorities is: “Do not wait for a warning.”

Broader Regional Impact

The heatwave is not limited to Victoria. South Australia is also experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures perhaps reaching the high 40s°C. The heat is forecast to spread into the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and New South Wales (NSW) through the weekend, with Canberra expected to reach 38°C (100°F) on Thursday and Friday. Poor air quality is also a concern in parts of NSW, notably in the southwest and northwest of Sydney, due to the heatwave .
