Vienna Tram Accident Leaves Man Hospitalized with Life-Threatening Injuries
Vienna, Austria – A serious accident occurred on Thursday evening when a tram driver lost control of her vehicle, colliding with a pedestrian at a bus stop. The incident, which took place on Marchfeldstraße near Dresden Street, left a 65-year-old man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Details of the Accident
At approximately 8:17 PM, a 26-year-old tram driver veered off the tracks and struck the bus stop island. A 65-year-old man was present at the bus stop at the time of the collision and became partially trapped under the tram. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Rescue Efforts and Injuries
The Vienna professional fire department extricated the man from under the tram. Paramedics from the Professional Rescue Service Vienna transported him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Investigation Reveals High Alcohol Level
Preliminary investigations revealed that the injured man had a blood alcohol level of 1.89 per mille, indicating significant intoxication.
New Year’s Eve Operations for Vienna Fire Brigade
The Vienna professional fire brigade was also heavily engaged on New Year’s Eve, responding to a total of 389 operations between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM. These included small fires, grass fires, and storm damage. A firefighter was slightly injured by a firework rocket in Vienna-Simmering. Fires also broke out in exhaust ducts, balconies, and garbage containers across the city. A fisherman’s hut on the Danube Island was completely destroyed by fire, but firefighters successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby grass areas.
