Volkswagen ID.3 Evolution: Neo Trim, Enhanced Software, and V2L Charging
Volkswagen is poised to significantly update its ID.3 electric hatchback, introducing a new “Neo” trim level alongside comprehensive software enhancements and the addition of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) charging capabilities. These updates, arriving in mid-April, represent a substantial refresh for the ID.3 and signal a broader rollout of new technologies across the entire ID. Range, including the ID.4 and ID.7.
ID.3 Neo: A New Identity
Originally considered “Neo” as a potential name for the ID.3 upon its initial release in 2016, Volkswagen is now officially adopting the moniker. The ID.3 Neo will feature redesigned interior elements, notably the return of physical buttons on the steering wheel in place of touch-sensitive controls. A digital key accessible via smartphone and one-pedal driving with full stop functionality are also included in the upgrade.
Software Overhaul for the ID. Family
The updates extend beyond the ID.3 Neo, encompassing the entire ID. Range. Volkswagen will introduce a revamped infotainment system with the ability to download and use third-party applications, such as games and streaming services. This aims to address previous criticisms regarding software functionality and bring the ID. Models in line with competitor offerings.
V2L Charging: Powering Your Life on the Go
For the first time, Volkswagen electric vehicles will gain Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing owners to power external devices directly from their car. With a power output of up to 3.6 kW, the system can operate appliances like electric grills, coffee makers, or even electric bicycles.
ID.4 Enhancements: Efficiency and Range
The ID.4 crossover will receive a new base electric motor, the APP 350, delivering 190 hp and increased torque. Paired with a new 58 kWh LFP battery pack, this combination is expected to improve efficiency and extend the range by up to 40 km (approximately 25 miles) in all-wheel-drive configurations.
Future ID. Models on the Horizon
The modernized ID.3 Neo is the first in a series of planned updates for Volkswagen’s electric lineup in 2026. The company intends to launch the ID. Polo, ID. Polo GTI, and ID. Cross, all designed to offer competitive technology at an attractive price point.
