Walgreens Launches Affordable Virtual Weight Management Platform with GLP-1 Access

Walgreens has entered the rapidly growing market for weight loss solutions with the launch of Walgreens Weight Management, a virtual healthcare service providing access to FDA-approved GLP-1 medications. The platform distinguishes itself by offering a pay-per-visit model, bypassing the monthly subscription fees common among competitors.

Affordable Access to GLP-1 Medications

The new service, currently available in 28 states, offers virtual visits with licensed doctors and nurse practitioners for $49 per visit. This eliminates the need for a monthly subscription, making it a potentially more accessible option for individuals seeking weight loss support and medication. Walgreens leverages its Rx Savings Finder tool to offer reduced out-of-pocket prices on Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy (semaglutide), starting at $149 per month for tablets and $199 per month for injectables.

How Walgreens Weight Management Works

Eligible adults aged 18-64 planning to self-pay for GLP-1 medication can complete an online video visit with a healthcare provider. The provider assesses health history, weight-related goals, and medical needs to determine if a GLP-1 agonist medication is appropriate. The program offers on-demand follow-up visits via chat or video for medication adjustments and side effect management, available seven days a week.

GLP-1 Medications Offered

Walgreens Weight Management offers several GLP-1 agonist medications, including:

  • Semaglutide (Wegovy – oral pills & injectable, Ozempic)
  • Tirzepatide (Zepbound)
  • Liraglutide (Saxenda)

While both Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide, Wegovy is specifically FDA-approved for weight loss, whereas Ozempic is approved to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Growing Demand for Weight Loss Drugs

Walgreens’ launch comes as demand for GLP-1 medications for weight loss continues to increase. A recent survey indicates that approximately 19% of large firms offering health benefits now cover these costly drugs for weight loss in 2025, up from 28% in 2024 among the largest firms .

Walgreens’ Competitive Edge

By adopting a pay-per-visit model, Walgreens differentiates itself from many telehealth competitors who rely on monthly subscription fees. This approach aims to provide a more affordable and flexible option for individuals seeking self-pay access to GLP-1 medications.

“Expanding our virtual healthcare platform to include weight management is part of our ongoing commitment to listening to patients and the services they want from their local pharmacy,” said Rick Gates, chief pharmacy officer at Walgreens, in a statement.
