Walker Returns to UH as Men’s Volleyball Coach After Baylor Stint
Former University of Houston (UH) men’s volleyball player and assistant coach Scott Walker has been named the program’s new head coach, according to a university announcement on July 12, 2024. Walker, who previously served as an assistant at Baylor for four seasons, returns to his alma mater after a career that includes playing for UH from 2008 to 2011.
Walker’s Background at UH and Baylor
Walker played collegiate volleyball at UH under head coach Matt Knoll, contributing to the team’s 2010 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship run. After his playing career, he remained involved with the program as a volunteer assistant before joining Baylor’s staff in 2020. During his tenure at Baylor, the Bears reached the NCAA Tournament in 2022 and 2023, according to NCAA records.
What This Means for UH Volleyball
UH athletics director Mike A. Johnson cited Walker’s “deep understanding of the program’s culture and values” in a statement. The decision comes after UH struggled to find consistency in recent seasons, finishing with a 15-16 record in 2023. Walker’s return is expected to bring continuity, as he was part of the coaching staff that helped UH reach the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
How Walker’s Experience at Baylor Could Impact UH
Baylor’s 2023 NCAA Tournament appearance marked the program’s first since 2015, highlighting Walker’s role in rebuilding the team. At UH, his focus will likely center on strengthening recruiting and improving defensive strategies, areas identified as priorities by the university. “Scott’s ability to develop players and his familiarity with our conference will be critical,” said Johnson.
What’s Next for UH Volleyball?
Walker’s official start date is set for August 1, 2024. The team’s 2024 season begins with a home opener against California on August 29. Fans will be watching closely to see how his coaching style, which emphasizes “aggressive play and player development,” as described in a 2022 Baylor press release, translates to UH’s roster.
