Walmart is deploying millions of ambient Internet of Things (IoT) battery-free sensors throughout its massive U.S. supply chain. This represents a significant step towards real-time inventory visibility and improved supply chain efficiency.
What is Ambient iot?
Ambient IoT is a new class of IoT devices that primarily draw power by harvesting ambient energy from sources like radio waves,light,motion,or heat. walmart is partnering with Wiliot to implement this large-scale deployment, which Wiliot calls the first of its kind in the retail sector. The rollout will focus on tracking pallets nationwide, with completion expected by the end of 2026. Expansion to other global markets is being considered after the U.S. rollout is complete.

At full scale, the system will monitor an estimated 90 million pallets of inventory.

These signals are transmitted wirelessly, providing a continuous stream of data to Walmart’s systems. Because they are battery-free, they considerably reduce maintenance costs and environmental impact.
